I have several suggestions: 1) it would be great if you allow the user to control the pointer size and color, 2) please allow writing and erasing on the screen during presentation, 3) consider adding next and previous arrows to control the transition to a next or previous slide. In present form, I have to scroll the page which does not give the immediate show of the next or previous slide.

Hello

1) This is planned in an upcoming version

2) Do you mean writing text with the keyboard or drawing with your finger? Drawing is coming in the next release.

3) I see the problem, we'll try to address this.

3) Is now implemented for Powerpoints, Keynote and PDF. Coming in the next release.

When the next release is going to be available?

We're planning to send it to Apple in a few days, so around 10-15 days I guess.

The page transition is not perfect though, it requires that each slide's dimensions have the default aspect ratio. So for example if you set a custom height on one of the slides, the transition will be wrong from that slide on.
Most presentations use the default slide dimensions so hopefully this won't be a problem.

I was excited to download the recent upgrade but got frustrated to find the following:
1- The pointer size is still very big and there is no control to change it's size or color. I work on medical pictures and there current pointer size covers the fine details I need to highlight. I thought the controls for pointer properties control was coming in this upgrade.
2- Drawing on the screen is a nice feature; however, the drawing line is faint in color and is too thick.
3- In working with PDFs, the next and previous controls are not available. In this way, pdf presentations cannot advance instantaneously (like powerpoint).

I had big hope on this upgrade, but it seems that I need to wait longer for these issues to be addressed.

1. No it's planned for the next upgrade.
2. Controls for drawing properties is also coming in the next upgrade.
3. Next and prev is available with PDFs when you hold your device in portrait orientation.

Thanks for your feedback.

I am teaching and have many pdf presentations from the LaTeX (Powerdot and Beamer). Is it possible to make Next and Prev in pdf to go item by item (not slide by slide only) ? This feature is available in the GoodReader application.

I was, at first, very pleased with the recent improvements in the update. The ability to position the pointer away from you finger and to draw on the PDF are both great.
However-- I use the Pointer app in presenting PDF's with diagrams and equations to my university classes and the ability to zoom in on parts of a PDF by finger gestures is crucial. Now this feature no longer works! When I expand the PDF it expands on the iPad but not on the screen.
Earlier you asked another poster whether they had mirroring turned on. This isn't anything I've seen on my iPad 2.

@Anonymous2: By "item to item" do you mean just slide down enough to see the next non-visible part?

@Ted: Thank you for your feedback. We will fix this by adding a setting to enable mirroring, that is, the exact same content that is showing on your device will be shown on the secondary screen. The downside having mirroring enabled is that the viewers will see the navigation bars, buttons etc. Getting zooming to work when mirroring is off is more difficult to do but we hope to get it working in a later update.
We're working on this fix right now and will post here again when the update is submitted to Apple.

It would be important to have the Next and Previous arrows in the pdf in all orientations (portrait and landscape).

Thanks!

Ted (not verified)

Karmeye--thanks for the reply! When do you think that update will be available? Since I use Dropbox with Pointer, I will use Dropbox to view PDFs (it allows mirrored zooming) until then. Alternatively, is there a way to downgrade back to the previous version of Pointer? Also, when you say that mirroring in the update will show the navigation bars, etc. I assume they will still disappear on both screens right after you make a selection.

New version was submitted to apple on Monday.

- Mirroring switch to exactly mirror the device screen (works only on iPad2).
- Set size, opacity and color of pointer
- Set opacity and color for drawing
- Setting to enable "Short scroll", which will only scroll to the non-visible area of the screen on next/prev.
- Next/Prev in landscape for pdf (will use short scroll)

We only worked 5 days on this update to ensure your needs as quickly as possible which led to the following:
- A size parameter for drawing did not make it into this update since we wanted to submit the update before Apple's event yesterday to make sure the update wouldn't be delayed in the approval process by all iOS5 supported apps.
- Also a known bug when selecting white, black or grey color for drawing. These colors becomes yellow, green or green instead.

Thank you for addressing our needs quickly. We will give you feedback once the update is released.

I have tried the new update and see you it as a major advance in the Pointer application. However, I have the following suggestions to further improve the application:

1- Provide user control on the distance between the finger and the pointer.
2- Sometimes drawing on a PDF does not work even though the "Draw" mode is selected.
3- Replace the two rectangles showing the "Point"  and "Draw" modes by symbols or logos. In this way, these two big rectangles are reduced in size on the screen when mirroring is ON.
4- Also, I suggest moving the location of the scroll arrows to the bottom of the screen along with the logos of the "point" and "draw" modes, and make the upper banner, where the document title is displayed, clear.
5- In a PDF presentation in the landscape mode, the short scroll arrows do not advance abruptly to the next page; however, the transition is noticeable. This feature is important in giving presentations so that the audience are not distracted by the transition process of each slide.
6- In relation to the last comment, using the short scroll arrows in the landscape orientation does not allow presenting the slide in full screen; however, part of the next slide is also visible and after several transitions parts of consecutive slides are displayed on the screen at the same time. Please adjust the scroll arrows to advance one full landscape page at a time to avoid this problem.

Please note that most of the time the iPad will be used in the landscape orientation while presenting on a projector because the smart cover does not allow the iPad to rest comfortably on a flat surface except in the landscape orientation. Therefore, making sure the Pointer application works perfectly in this iPad orientation is important.

1. Is this needed, if you just want a larger distance we can increase it. Or do you actually want to change the distance from time to time?

2. Could you please give more specific info when this happens?

3. Does it matter, the whole bottom bar is there anyway. If we reduce the size they will be harder to tap.

4. What do you mean by "logos of the point and draw modes", if you are referring to the buttons on (3) they are at the bottom? Sorry I do not understand.

5. This is a feature. If there's no transition animation the next/prev might not be recognized by the audience. Will add a setting for it.

6. Fullscreen doesn't work with mirroring on, because the aspect ratio must be the same. Is the whole first page of your pdf showing in landscape before you start scrolling?

Thank you for your feedback. To be sure that we will address your issues in the next update we would appreciate if you could test it so that you can confirm before we submit it to Apple. To do this we need your iPad's UDID, instructions are here: http://smeans.com/iphone/iphone-device-id/. Please send it to us via the contacts form.

1- I think this feature is needed. First, having some distance between the finger and the pointer is a good idea because it allows the presenter to see exactly where he points and not get obstructed by his finger. However, the distance between the finger and pointer right now is too large. Due to that, I cannot point to something on the bottom of the slide because my finger needs to be outside the iPad screen.
2- After examining this problem at more detail, I found that “sometimes” after I switch from the Point mode to the Draw mode I cannot draw and I stay in the Point mode. However, if I shut down the application and reopen the document again, it works fine and I can draw normally. If I have more observations on this problem, I will post them here.
3 and 4- The problem is that when mirroring is ON, all the scroll arrows and the control bars (like the title bar on the very top and the bottom bar where the Point and Draw buttons are located) become visible on the projector and cover the presented material every time we need to point to something, draw something, or press the scroll arrows to advance to next or previous slide and they disappear afterwards. This creates two problems: a) the scroll arrows and control bars cover the presented material when they appear, and b) their frequent appearance and disappearance during the presentation is distracting to audience. To overcome these two problems I suggest the following: a) remove the title bar at all (no need for it) and make the bottom bar displayed all the time, and b) put the scroll arrows, point and draw rectangles, action button, and the local files button (which was located on the title bar) in the bottom bar. For space and design purposes, I suggest that the point and draw rectangles get replaced with small logos or pictures so that the bottom bar can accommodate all the controls.
5- Adding a setting to control the transition is a great idea. This will let people choose what suits their needs. When abrupt transition is selected, the audience recognizes the transition by the appearance of the new material on the display (similar to Powerpoint).
6- The first page of my pdf before I start scrolling is shown in landscape orientation. Also, all other pages in the pdf are in landscape orientation. After scrolling 5 times, the pages start to go out of frame and portions of two slides start to appear on the display. I don’t know what is causing this problem.
7- Another suggestion: I noticed that the slide sometimes move up or down when we place our finger on it to either point or draw. This makes the projector display moves up and down in front of the audience. I suggest that you prevent slide movement during the point and draw modes to avoid this problem, especially that now we use the scroll arrows to advance the slides.
General comment: please contact let me know if any of my comments is unclear. Also, I will be more than happy to try any beta versions of the application and give you feedback on it. I will send my iPad’s UDID through the contact form.

6. The problem is caused by a incorrect assumption on our part that all pdf's are in portrait mode and therefore the scrolling is defaulted to "short scroll" when a pdf is loaded in landscape mode. We'll fix this, thanks.

7. Does the scrolling happen between the point where you put your finger down and before the pointer starts fading in? Because as it is now, once the pointer starts fading in, the scrolling is locked.

Did you send the UDID? If you did, I haven't received it.
We'll continue the discussion via mail.

Thank you

7- Maybe I did not explain the problem clearly. I mean that when we place our finger on the iPad screen to either point or draw, the pdf page shakes (moves up and down but do not scroll to next page) before the pointer appears on the screen. This makes the projector display to shake as well in front of the audience. It would be better if the pdf page is locked in place and does not move when the finger is placed on it. We can now use the scroll arrows to advance the pdf pages without scrolling with our fingers.

By the way, I have send my iPad UDID through the contact form.

Support,
Great idea but lacks a few things.
You need to be able to control the presentation without buttons, etc. change slide up by tapping once on the RH side and down once on the LH Side.
It is annoying that the top and bottom but tuns are displayed. Maybe you need to utilize gestures to have them displayed or tap in the centre of the screen.

When you download a file from Dropbox you need to be able to save it in local files. Also you need to facility to allow the user to open in. When in pages and the file is selected provide the option to open in Pointer.

Lots of these improvements are coming in the next version.
For example:
- For pdfs, sliding pages will be like swiping pages in iBooks. Tapping on RH/LH sides to change is hard to get right because it will easily be unintentional.
- There will be an option to show top/bottom bars with a two finger tap instead of one finger. This will prevent them from appearing.
- Open in Pointer will be available. So eg. you can open email attachments in Pointer. They will appear in local files. (May come as an in-app purchase but not likely).

Caching Dropbox files is on the todo list.

Btw, is it enough to only add the last visited page to the recent list? because we cannot add every page of a browsing session.

Anonymous (not verified)

I agree. I would say the last 10 or so visited sites. When used in an educational environment I return to the same sites all the time.

hmm, I think we'll only add actual documents to the recent list, ie if you browse to a pdf file the pdf file will be added.

Maybe what you need is a bookmarks funktion to bookmark webpages?

WOW! That sounds perfect. You guys are great!
